Our History
We are an open and inclusive church reaching out to our local and global communities. With Jesus Christ as our guide and with God’s help, we strive to nurture faith, spiritual growth and fellowship.
OUR HISTORY
Unity United Church has been part of the Vasey community for over a century—our church building was built way back in 1909!
Over the years, we’ve shared connections with nearby churches in Port McNicoll, Ebenezer, Victoria Harbour, Coulson, Hillsdale, Hobart, and Dalston. Each of these places has helped shape who we are today.
In 2008, we decided to bring our congregations together. Vasey United Church and St. John’s United Church in Victoria Harbour joined forces, and soon after, friends from Ebenezer United Church came on board. It was a big change, but it made us stronger and more united.
We’ve had some wonderful leaders along the way. Rev. Beverley Irwin helped us through the early days, followed by Rev. Kerry Perry, and then Rev. Debbie MacMillan, who guided us for seven years and brought fresh ideas to our church life.
Rev. Lois Brown took over in 2016 and served until her retirement in 2024. Most recently, we welcomed Rev. Samuel Mavundu and family from Zimbabwe in March 2025, continuing our tradition of spiritual leadership and community outreach.
Land Acknowlegement
Unity United Church acknowledges that we gather on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, specifically the Ojibway/Chippewa peoples. This land is part of the area covered by Treaty 16 (Lake Simcoe Treaty) and the J. Collins land purchase. We recognize that Vasey, Ontario, is also home to many Métis Nation of Ontario citizens and was historically part of the territory of the Wendat (Huron) and Petun (Tobacco) Nations before the 17th century.
We are grateful for the rich cultural and spiritual practices shared by Indigenous peoples, past and present. As a welcoming and inclusive community, we honour the enduring presence and contributions of Indigenous peoples to this land. We commit ourselves to learning, sharing, and fostering respectful relationships as we continue to gather, worship, and serve together.
