Volunteer Opportunities
To ensure our Sunday service runs smoothly and everyone feels welcome, we rely on volunteers to take on essential roles. These include greeting attendees, reading scripture, operating the lift, running audio-visual equipment, and coordinating Coffee Hour. Each of these tasks helps foster a warm, inclusive environment and supports the seamless flow of our gatherings. Sign-up sheets for these roles are posted in the Fellowship Hall, making it easy for anyone to participate and share in our community life.
Sunday School
Sunday School is available for all children attending church, offering a welcoming space to explore and learn about Jesus. Our Sunday School uses stories from both the New and Old Testament, as well as the Godly Play program, which invites kids to dive into Bible stories through imaginative, hands-on activities and creative storytelling. Children are encouraged to connect these stories to their own lives, sparking wonder and understanding in a nurturing environment. The signature Godly Play approach uses gentle storytelling and engaging materials, making every Sunday a time for discovery and growth.
If you have a passion for supporting children’s Christian education, we warmly invite you to become a volunteer teacher. No special experience is needed—just a caring heart and a love for helping young people grow in faith!
Sunday Tasks
Greeting
If you love welcoming people or simply enjoy helping others feel at home, the Greeting role is a wonderful way to get involved. Greeters are posted inside the sanctuary to offer a warm smile, a handshake or hug, help members find their name tags, and answer any questions for newcomers. In addition, Greeters bring forward the offering and the prayer book during our service, helping everything run smoothly. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, as we’re looking for greeters every week—it’s as simple as adding your name to the list. By greeting, you’ll help create an atmosphere where everyone feels valued and included.
Reading
Reading Scripture is a meaningful way to participate in our Sunday worship services. The Scripture readings form the foundation for the minister’s message, helping to guide and inspire the congregation. Volunteers are invited to sign up on a weekly basis whenever they are available, making this role a small but impactful commitment. We value having a variety of readers from our community, as it enriches the worship experience and is appreciated by everyone. Whether you’re comfortable at the microphone or simply want to contribute in a supportive way, reading Scripture is a wonderful opportunity to be involved and to help shape our shared spiritual journey.
Technology
Our Technology Team plays a vital role in connecting our church community both in person and online. Sunday services are live-streamed on YouTube, making worship accessible to those unable to attend in person. During each service, volunteers manage the PowerPoint slides, which replace the traditional Bulletin by displaying hymn lyrics, prayers, and the complete order of service for everyone present.
Clear, reliable audio is essential to our worship experience. Whether in the sanctuary or joining online, good sound quality ensures that everyone can hear prayers, music, and messages without distraction, allowing all to fully participate in the service. Our soundboard volunteers work to create a welcoming atmosphere where every word and note is heard—connecting hearts across the congregation and beyond.
If you’re interested in helping out, consider joining us for a Sunday at the PowerPoint or soundboard—no experience required, as training is provided. It’s a great way to support the congregation and have fun while doing it!
Lift Operator
The Lift Operator plays a vital role in welcoming and assisting everyone who enters our building. Responsible for ensuring easy access to both the sanctuary and the downstairs area—where Coffee Hour and meetings take place—the Lift Operator is often the first friendly face people see at the door. This position is essential at the start and end of each service, providing support and hospitality to all who enter. Training is provided to ensure operators feel confident and comfortable in their duties. By helping with accessibility and greeting attendees, Lift Operators contribute to making our community inclusive, safe, and welcoming for everyone.
Coffee Hour
After our regular Sunday service, we gather for Coffee Hour—a cherished time of fellowship and community. Volunteers are invited to help set up, brew coffee and tea, and bring light refreshments such as cookies, fruit, cheese and crackers, or whatever tickles their fancy. This welcoming space allows us to connect, share conversation, and build relationships in a relaxed atmosphere. At the close of Coffee Hour, volunteers also assist with tidying up, ensuring our gathering area is ready for future events. Everyone is encouraged to lend a hand and participate, making Coffee Hour a truly collaborative and enjoyable tradition for our congregation.

Communications
Help us keep Unity and our wider community connected and informed! Our Communications team uses the Heartbeat newsletter, Facebook, our website, our sign, and more to share updates, upcoming events, and important news. If you enjoy writing, sharing stories, or engaging with others online and offline, join us in spreading the word and keeping everyone in the loop.
Decorating
Bring your creativity to our sanctuary and make it beautiful for special occasions! There are no formal meetings—simply show up when you can and join in as we decorate for Easter, Christmas, Remembrance Day, Thanksgiving, and more. Whether you have an eye for detail or simply enjoy adding a festive touch, your flair will help make our space shine for all to enjoy. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand whenever you’re able!
Finance
Help ensure Unity’s financial health and sustainability! Our Finance Committee is dedicated to keeping our church “in the black,” carefully managing budgets, monitoring expenses, and supporting fundraising efforts. If you have an interest in numbers, stewardship, or simply want to contribute to the well-being of our community, we welcome your involvement. No specialized experience required—just a willingness to help keep our church thriving for today and tomorrow!
Kitchen
If food is your passion, this committee is for you! The Kitchen Committee coordinates all church activities involving food, from preparing funeral lunches and organizing potlucks to leading our Christmas community outreach with meals and sweets. Our certified kitchen is at the heart of these events, ensuring every meal is prepared and served in a safe, professional environment. In addition to planning and serving meals, the team is responsible for the regular and deep cleaning of the kitchen—keeping dishes, appliances, counters, and storage areas spotless and ready for use. Whether you enjoy cooking, baking, cleaning, or simply bringing people together around delicious food, your talents can make a meaningful difference. Ministry & Personnel
Ministry & Personnel Committee – As one of Unity’s two mandatory committees, the Ministry & Personnel Committee plays a central role in supporting our staff, which includes the minister, music director, administrator, cleaners, and treasurer. Meeting quarterly, this team collaborates closely with staff to nurture a positive, respectful, and healthy work environment, offering guidance, feedback, and encouragement. Confidentiality is fundamental to the committee’s work, ensuring trust and privacy in all personnel matters.
Additionally, the Ministry & Personnel Committee oversees personnel concerns, such as contracts, job descriptions, and evaluations, and acts as a liaison between staff and the congregation when necessary. Pastoral Care
The Pastoral Care Committee offers a meaningful way to support and connect with members of our church family. Through visits, phone calls, and prayer, committee members share compassion and encouragement with those who may be facing illness, loss, or loneliness. If you have a caring heart and a desire to make a difference, we invite you to join us. No special training is needed—just kindness, empathy, and a willingness to walk alongside others with grace and respect.
Phone Tree - Keeping Our Community Connected
The Phone Tree Committee plays a crucial role in ensuring everyone in our faith community stays informed, especially during important or unexpected situations. This group springs into action when the church must close on a Sunday or when there’s urgent news that can’t be adequately communicated by email alone. Each member on our contact list receives a personal phone call, making sure no one is left out and everyone feels connected. If you value community and enjoy reaching out to others, consider joining our Phone Tree Committee and help keep the lines of communication open for all!
Property & Maintenance
The Property and Maintenance Committee is responsible for ensuring our church property remains safe, functional, and welcoming. This team handles both regular and occasional maintenance tasks, such as water quality testing, inspecting fire extinguishers and the AED machine, and checking emergency lighting. Periodically, the committee also takes care of snow removal from the roof, furnace maintenance, and the upkeep of tables, chairs, pews, flooring, and windows. Many hands make light work—if you’re handy or simply willing to lend your time, join us in protecting and maintaining our church home for everyone’s comfort and safety!
Trustees
The Trustees Committee is one of our church’s essential groups, responsible for caring for and managing all aspects of our church property. While the property is officially owned by the United Church of Canada, it is entrusted to Unity United for stewardship and daily care. Members are typically invited to serve as trustees and, in keeping with tradition, often continue in this role for life. Trustees oversee the maintenance, safety, and preservation of our buildings and grounds, and are also responsible for any physical alterations, renovations, or additions to the church property. Their careful stewardship ensures that our facilities remain welcoming, functional, and secure for all who gather here. The dedication of our trustees preserves our physical space as a place of worship, community, and outreach for generations to come.
Worship
Worship Team – In partnership with our ministry personnel, the Worship Team works to enrich and diversify our Sunday Worship services. Meeting monthly, we thoughtfully plan and shape each service to ensure it is meaningful, inclusive, and engaging for everyone. Our team collaborates to select themes, music, and creative elements that help deepen our collective worship experience and foster a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere for all who attend.
